Getting divorced is often an emotional time in a person’s life that they’d rather not share with the rest of the world. But unfortunately for celebrities, a lack of privacy comes with the territory and sometimes the general public finds out about your personal life before you’re ready to announce it.
Our readers here in Texas can see this playing out for ‘Real Housewives of New York’ star Ramona Singer this month after her recent filing for divorce was picked up by tabloids and newspapers across the nation. Because the couple has not been quick to confirm the rumors, it’s quite possible that they are keeping quiet in an attempt to keep some level of privacy that their celebrity status does not usually allow them.
Because the divorce papers are sealed, it’s unknown whether Ramona cited infidelity as a reason for the dissolution of her more than 20 years of marriage. This would have likely confirmed recent rumors that she caught her husband cheating on her with another woman. Although New York family law courts allow couples to file for no-fault divorce, they can also choose to file for divorce on fault grounds as well, according to nolo.com. Although the admission of fault will not require the couple to stay separated for a certain amount of time as it would here in Texas, citing infidelity could be a factor when it comes to certain disputes that could arise during the settlement process.
Though child custody will not be an issue for this couple, — reports indicate that the couple’s daughter is 19 and therefore of legal age — because of both Ramona and her husband’s professions, it’s possible that the pair may come into conflict when it comes to dividing their assets. Arguments could also arise over alimony payments as well, though it’s likely that the couple will keep these disputes a secret as long as possible to ensure as much privacy as they can.
